Berner Rosen

an apple brandy made by Streuli's in Horgen, Switzerland

Producer

The Streulis are distilling since 1894 on their farm Rietwies near lake Zurich. Since 2011, under Urs Streuli, they operate with a new wood-fired copper still. According to Urs Streuli, the wood-firing doesn't really have an impact on the taste of the brandy, but he still does it because he can use wood from his own forest on the farm. Indeed, this is his credo: Everything related to the liquid happens entirely and exclusively on his farm - from the planting of the trees, caring for them, harvesting the fruits, distilling and bottling. Under this philosophy, he produces 2000 bottles of single-variety fruit brandies made from fruits from his own farm every year, highlighting the diversity of aromas. He is most famous for his pear and apple brandies, for which he has gained several awards.

Berner Rosen

An old apple variety with a telling name: It's originally from Berne, and the fruits carry a floral aroma reminiscent of roses. However, since the fruit cannot be kept for long without spoiling unlike other apple varieties, it went out of fashion. But Urs Streuli considers them particularly suited to distilling, and thus he created this beautiful brandy with aromas of ripe red apples, apple skin and rose.
